Covenant Medical Center Achieves Full Stroke Designation | KLBK | KAMC

Here is a press release from Covenant Health:

LUBBOCK, Texas (PRESS RELEASE) – Covenant Medical Center has been recognized by the Joint Commission as the first and only Comprehensive Stroke Center in West Texas. Comprehensive Stroke Centers provide the highest level of stroke care and can handle the most complex stroke cases.

“It would be difficult to overstate the importance of this new designation to our patients, the region and the Covenant Health System,” said Dr. Thomas Windisch, Neurointerventional Surgeon at Covenant Medical Center.

When it comes to stroke care, time is the brain. Stroke patients who receive faster treatment are more likely to go home with fewer deficits. Having a Comprehensive Stroke Center in West Texas allows stroke patients to receive the emergency care they need as quickly as possible.

Covenant Medical Center is now one of 40 comprehensive stroke centers in the state and one of only 13 certified by the Joint Commission. It is the only comprehensive stroke center within 300 miles in any direction.

“Few people realize the extensive effort, coordination and administrative support required to achieve certification as a comprehensive stroke center through a joint commission,” Dr. Windisch added.

Joint Commission investigators are experts in stroke care and are an impartial review of the program to ensure the hospital is meeting quality standards for stroke patient care.

The Covenant Medical Center was subjected to a rigorous and unannounced on-site examination. During the visit, a team of Joint Commission inspectors assessed compliance with related certification standards, including 24/7 medical coverage to care for the sickest patients in a Stroke.

“As part of earning this designation, CMC needed to demonstrate its ability to provide a constellation of uninterrupted services, perhaps most notably the ability to diagnose and treat a multitude of neurological emergencies, including stroke, aneurysms, hemorrhages, seizures and

trauma,” Dr. Windisch explained. “This relies on the continued availability of doctors, nurses and other providers skilled in the emergency removal of blood clots blocking blood vessels in the brain, treatment of ruptured aneurysms, evacuation of hematomas in or around the brain and stabilizing otherwise neurologically unstable patients.”

The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewers also conducted on-site observations and interviews.

“This process was originally envisioned more than a decade ago and has required colossal efforts by passionate actors to get here,” Dr Windisch said. “It required Herculean efforts in other areas such as neurology, emergency department, neurosurgery, radiology, critical care, anesthesiology and pharmacy, to name a few.”

This designation could not have been achieved without our partnership with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and Texas Tech Physicians.

TTUHSC neurology faculty and residents participate in research, respond to stroke alerts in the emergency department, and routinely cover stroke calls at Covenant Medical Center.

The Medical Director of the Covenant Medical Center Stroke Program is Dr. Saif Bushnaq of Texas Tech Physicians.

Covenant Medical Center has earned the Gold Seal of Approval® from the Joint Commission and the Heart-Check mark from the American Stroke Association for stroke care certification.

Earlier this year, Covenant Medical Center also received an award from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association for the 2022 Get With the Guidelines program, which recognizes stroke programs for achieving standards of quality that has been proven to improve patient outcomes.
