FirstHealth of the Carolinas and Pinehurst Medical Clinic recently welcomed an experienced medical oncologist, Dr Matthew Karpenko.
Karpenko joins the oncology team at Pinehurst Medical Clinic and a growing cancer care team at FirstHealth with oncologists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, oncology pivot nurses and additional clinical trial professionals.
Karpenko will be a member of the Pinehurst Medical Clinic and serve patients at the FirstHealth Outpatient Center in Pinehurst.
âI have decided to join FirstHealth and the Pinehurst Medical Clinic for many reasons, but the first is the commitment to excellent and compassionate care. I want to work with a team of highly qualified and experienced physicians to provide the highest quality care to my patients, âsaid Karpenko. âFirstHealth and Pinehurst Medical Clinic are constantly evaluating new treatment approaches to enable us to provide personalized treatment plans for our patients. We have a great team.
Karpenko worked in oncology for 25 years and received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Lake Eerie College in 2002. He also received a Fellowship in Oncology and Hematology from Ohio State University.
âI knew from an early age that I wanted to be a doctor. For me, practicing in hematology and oncology is serious business. A cancer diagnosis brings intense fear and anxiety to patients and their families, âsaid Karpenko.
âOur patients are in physical and emotional pain. They are incredibly vulnerable and literally trust us for their lives. Part of my job is to tone down those emotions and communicate with them really well. My relationship with my patients quickly becomes personal. My philosophy has always been to treat a patient like a loved one or a member of their family, and it is rewarding to touch lives and make a positive difference for my patients and their families.
As part of the growing FirstHealth Cancer Services team, Karpenko and the rest of the Pinehurst Medical Clinic team will soon care for patients under one roof at the FirstHealth Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Construction on the center began in May and will be completed in early 2023.
Outside of work, Karpenko enjoys spending time outdoors with his family and watching college football.
