Mary Greeley Medical Center describes the issues of the vaccination mandate

Many hospitals across the country are working to make sure their staff are fully immunized or have exemption forms approved by January 4. As part of the Biden administration’s immunization mandate, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services have rules in place for facilities that receive Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement. These rules provide for staff to be fully vaccinated or to submit to religious or medical exemptions. Other rules have been implemented by the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, but a federal appeals court has temporarily suspended the vaccine requirement for some companies. Until the end of the term, the Mary Greeley Medical Center encouraged its staff to get vaccinated. A spokesperson for the hospital told KCCI that 89% of staff are vaccinated, 8% are not and 3% have either handed in their exemption forms or are in the process of being fully vaccinated. “When the vaccines were approved by the FDA, we saw another wave of employees who might have been hesitant at first,” said Steve Sullivan, spokesperson for Mary Greeley Medical Center. “They were waiting for that FDA approval, which gave them the level of comfort they needed.” The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services reimburse hospitals across the country for patient care. Sullivan says if hospitals don’t comply, they would lose their CMS certification, which would have a severe financial impact. According to Sullivan, CMS reimbursements make up about 60% of Mary Greeley’s budget. “We’re going to do everything we can to make sure we’re in good standing with CMS on January 4th,” Sullivan said. “We have to do it. I think our patients expect it. I think our staff expect it. They know what’s at stake here.”
