The Zimbabwe Defense Forces (ZDF) will continue to work with ordinary people to achieve national goals and interests, Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri said.

She said this last week after more than 80 people underwent free eye cataract extraction surgery while several hundred others received various medical treatments in Mashonaland Central this month, as part of the ZDF medical awareness program. The program was part of the exercise dubbed “ROUT II”, designed to hone the ZDF’s capabilities in fulfilling its constitutional mandate to safeguard the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Zimbabwe.

The first edition of the exercise took place in the province of Masvingo last year.

Officially inaugurating medical outreach at Mt Darwin Hospital, Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said ZDF and the masses enjoyed a long relationship characterized by national development.

“The ZDF is and remains a people’s force that will continue to work with the people for the prosperity of this beautiful country for future generations,” she said.

“Today we are witnessing a great job that our defense forces health personnel have done over the past month which has benefited our people who had to travel long distances for eye care and other medical operations. .” Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said the ZDF will remain committed to securing peace in the country for the realization of national aspirations and development.

“No nation will develop without peace. It is thanks to these men and women in uniform that we enjoy peace and quiet. “Many development programs are underway as we move towards realizing our president’s vision (of an upper middle income society),” she said. Regarding demining, Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said that the ZDF has cleared large areas in the province, which has freed up more land for economic use.

“We are aware that landmines remain a threat in the province. The forces have been extremely successful in reclaiming large areas of infected land which some are now using for many purposes,” she said. Regarding the gas project at Muzarabani, Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said that with the exploration of gas and oil in the Dande Basin by Invictus Energy, was poised to transform the economy.

Zimbabwe National Army Health Services Director Colonel Philip Katsande said they will continue to engage communities on various health issues they face. A beneficiary of the scheme, Mr Jani Ndlovu (59) from Dande who had a 20-year-old cataract removed, said he never imagined that one day he would be able to have surgery.

“After 20 years, today I am finally happy that the cataract has been removed. This program has done me a favor. We thank the ZDF,” he said.
